If you are looking for a holiday that will free you from stress, bring you back to nature and make you feel full of energy once again – opt for an active holiday in Montenegro! The mountains, sea, rivers, lakes, and canyons – choose your adventure and experience a summer to be remembered.
Apart from Kotor’s town walls, St John’s Fortress, which offers a famous view over the Bay of Kotor, Ivanova korita and Njegoš’s mausoleum, Savin kuk, and Black Lake, you can also walk through the unbelievable mountain of Lukavica to Captain’s Lake, pass through the Mrtvica Canyon and the Wishing Gate, discover the heart-shaped Lake Trnovac and experience Mt Orjen in the light of a full moon. For those who want to conquer the Montenegrin alps – the Prokletije Mountains, the challenging “Peaks of the Balkans” trail awaits you, and also the “Via Dinarica” mountaineering and hiking route which National Geographic Traveler included among the best destinations in the world. All these and much, much more...
Montenegro’s natural beauty is linked together by cycling routes, so don’t pass up the opportunity to experience some of them; for example, the route which starts from the fishing village of Dodoši, through the wetland region of Lake Skadar, all the way to the fortress of Žabljak Crnojevića. It has been adapted for recreational cyclists, as has the popular “figure of eight” – a trail which starts from Plav, passing by Lake Plav, Mt. Visitor and the River Ljuča, and takes you to Gusinje and back to the start point, a trail in the shape of the figure eight. If you love challenges, try the “Endless Countrysides” trail which starts from Podgorica and passes through five municipalities: Danilovgrad, Šavnik, Plužine, Žabljak, and Kolašin. Besides this one, in Montenegro there are another four national trails waiting for you: “Sweet and Savoury”, “Discoveries in the North”, “The Magical East” and “Stories by the Water”.

Rafting on the River Tara is a good enough reason in itself to visit Montenegro. This unforgettable experience floating downstream in rubber dinghies, getting through foaming rapids, is brimming with adrenaline, which will return the smile to your face. Apart from being the cleanest river in Europe, the Tara is in the top three most attractive rivers for rafting in the world.
The deepest canyon in Europe is located right here, so Montenegro’s attractiveness as a canyoning destination is no surprise. Apart from the famous Tara, there is also the mysterious Nevidio, and if its “kamikaze gate” sounds ominous, just wait till you try the Grlja Canyon in the Prokletije Mountains! But is Bar’s River Vruća or Kotor’s Škurda more beautiful? It’s up to you to discover!
Hanging out with the clouds in the sky above Montenegro is an adventure in itself. Petar Lončar, the first pilot in the world to fly to all seven continents in a paraglider, says that only Durmitor is unforgettable. Others claim, however, that flying above the Bay of Boka Kotorska is the most beautiful sight in the world, and the launch site Dizdarica, near Herceg Novi, is a real mecca for lovers of this extreme sport. Besides Mt. Durmitor and Mt. Orjen, you can also find launch sites on Mt. Visitor and at Brajići.
Kitesurfers adore the Large Beach (13 km long) which is reminiscent of desert dunes, and the largest kitesurfing centre in the Balkans is located here. This place has a special energy which is hard to put into words. The same goes for Lake Vražje in Durmitor, and kitesurfing devotees sometimes test their skills in the Verige Straits or on Lake Krupac.
Thanks to Lake Plav and the Rivers Ljuča, Lim, and Zlorečica, Montenegro has announced itself on the world map of fly fishing. The European championship in this sporting discipline was held last year in Berane, Plav, and Andrijevica, and the satisfied participants declared the small Balkan country their new favourite fly fishing destination. This type of angling which for many is also “therapy in nature” has a long tradition also on the part of the River Tara close to Mojkovac, which is ideal for this type of sport.
Are you ready to fly above the spectacular Tara Canyon, at a height of 150 m? Or maybe you prefer to experience this adventure above a lake, for example Lake Piva? It is just as good to try the zipline above the Boka Kotorska, in the famous village of Njeguši. Choose your own zipline adventure, find some good company and make this a summer to remember!
Discover hidden tunnels, grottos, and the reefs of the Island of Sveti Nikola, explore Poseidon’s city on the Luštica Peninsula, and peek into “Sweet Cave” which is located on Bigovo Cape. You will find diving sites on parts of Jaz Beach and Slovenska Beach. The strange underwater world of the south Adriatic also hides the wrecks of Yugoslav naval warships, but also many more things of interest...
If you cannot imagine a holiday in nature without horse riding and you believe in the special bond between humans and this noble beast, then you have come to the right place! Enjoy adventures through the exceptional beauty of the mountain scenery in places such as Pavino Polje, and get to know your hosts – they will remind you of long-forgotten heroes. You can also practise this relaxing sport at Ada Bojana – doctors confirm that it has a therapeutic effect. Also at the Mount Joy Ranch you can try hippotherapy – physiotherapy with the help of horses.
Do you love nature and slightly envy mountaineers’ feeling of freedom when they reach the top of a mountain? Then you must try Via Ferrata – safe climbing up sheer cliffs. It is time to get to know up close these fascinating mountains behind Kotor, but also to conquer His Majesty – Mt. Durmitor. Besides Via Ferrata, you can also test your climbing skills at the Smokovac climbing area, close to Podgorica.
For a day full of laughter and great fun in nature, visit one of the adventure parks. Whichever one you choose – on Mt. Orjen, Ivanova korita, Gorica Forest Park, Kolašin, or Black Lake – you won’t go wrong. Whether you come with friends or family, set your goals and test the limits of your endurance and dexterity. Children will particularly enjoy themselves and talk about their adventures with their parents.
